long time no blog

Whoa, I just looked at the date on the last post and it's been a month since I last blogged! In some ways, a lot has happened and in other ways, we're just going along, doing our usual.

[ baby ]

We had a scary experience with the baby on May 6th. I had some really heavy bleeding that morning that necessitated a trip to the ER (it was too early for the doctor's office). An ultrasound showed the baby was just fine--in fact, there's a *very active* baby in there! The ultrasound did show that I have placenta previa--the placenta is partially covering the cervix. That same day after being released from the ER, I saw one of the OBs in the clinic I go to and a polyp was discovered. I had to be really careful for a week until I could see my regular OB. That was hard--I couldn't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. I really realized how much "heavy" lifting I do each day during that week! Laundry baskets, putting things away--even some of the dishes that I nestle/stack are kinda heavy! My follow up visit with my doctor showed the polyp had "disappeared"--seems it pulled back into wherever it came from. I don't really understand how that works but the good news was that I hadn't had any bleeding for that entire week so my doctor said I could resume normal activities. I'm still being careful, of course, but I don't have to be quite so "aware" of what I'm doing. Dr. L. also said that the ER ultrasound had showed the placenta was attached "anteriorly", which means that as my uterus expands, the placenta will move out of the way so come delivery time, I should not have any problems. I had another ultrasound on the 16th and everything looks good. I'm coming up on the halfway mark (20 weeks this next Thursday) and looking forward to feeling the baby move.

[ mother's day ]

First, a very belated Happy Mother's Day to Mom Allen, Mom Swain, my sister, sisters-in-law, and all mothers who read this blog! I hope you had a wonderful day! Mom A, it was great to talk to you on the phone.

For church, the ward bought pansy plants. C&J chose a nice purple one for me. They also made me "flowers" in Primary--you stick a big gumdrop on a skewer with the rounded end pointing down, then get the Keebler fudge cookies that look like flowers (I can't think of the name right now), put that on top of the big gumdrop, then a smaller gumdrop on top to hold the cookie in place. I got two and they were delicious! They also made some really cute gifts at school. Steven cooked dinner of some of my favorite foods and the children cleaned up. All in all, a wonderful Mother's Day for me!

[ choir ]

Christie and Jordan wrapped up choir with three performances on May 14 and 15 (one was a school assembly). They did great and had a great time. Grandma and Grandpa Swain went to the Wednesday performance, Steven and I went on Thursday. Jordan had a small speaking part on Wednesday and G&G said he has quite a loud voice! I saw Mrs. Gertsch--Christie's teacher and one of the choir directors and she said Jordan was really cute. Both children had fun and want to do it again next year.

[ school ]

Only 8 more days of school! Homework has lessened somewhat so the teachers are winding down. Christie has a field trip to the zoo and Jordan has a field trip to the Planetarium. We got a schedule of events for the last couple of weeks of school in the May school newsletter and the PTA's got some fun activities to wrap things up. C&J are ready for school to be over! They've both done very well this year and Steven and I are very proud of them.

[ church ]

Last Sunday our bishopric was released and a new one called. The former 1st counselor, Dennis Anderson, was called as bishop, and he called Jon Hodson and Aaron Bullock as counselors. I am still teaching the Deaf Valiant class and Steven is still teaching 2nd and 3rd Sundays in High Priests. Our HP group leader is moving out of the ward, and his wife is one of the Primary counselors, so we'll see how things change, with our new bishopric and new leaders needing to be called (Bro. Hodson is the executive secretary).

[ work ]

Steven's enjoying work--he has a variety of projects going on that keeps him busy and interested. This week was a quiet week due to a lot of the senior level management that he interacts with on a daily basis gone to New York for a technical support conference with the Rochester group. I'm scaling back on Deaf Mentor activities--before, I was helping interview candidates for open positions but now I'm just going to focus on the new curriculum and the Deaf Mentor Conference in September. I had the chance to be involved with a new Signing Time project at the beginning of May. They're doing a new Baby Signing Time series. We filmed May 5 and 6. I missed the second shoot due to the ER visit but luckily we had finished the teaching segments on Monday, which were the most important parts as far as ASL accuracy went, and did the songs on Tuesday.

[ Miss Deaf Utah Pageant ]

I was asked to be the executive secretary for the Miss Deaf Utah committee. We had our first meeting on May 14th. I don't think I'll have to do too much other than attend meetings and activities since we have quite an exhaustive list of positions so that no one person is overloaded. I'm looking forward to being involved with something I've never done before. The next Miss Deaf Utah pageant will be in April 2009.

[ miscellaneous tidbits ]

After 3 days of really warm (think 80/90) degree weather, we've had nearly a week of rainy weather and it appears it's going to continue for a few more days. The rain has done wonders for our lawn--we didn't turn on our sprinklers until last Saturday (24th) and some areas were looking really dry. We have some outside projects we want to do that we'll get started on when the weather dries a bit and when we decide exactly what we want to do! Mostly we are going to replace the rock borders around the flower beds with curbing but we want to expand and reshape them so we need to figure out exactly where we're going to do that. I had some big plans for replanting the flower beds but I'm thinking I'll just put down a good layer of mulch and leave it for this year.

[ wrapping up ]

Well, that's our lives over the past month. Mom and Dad, we love you and enjoy reading about your mission experiences. We look forward to hearing about your adventures in Namibia!

Love,
S, M, C, J and baby
