quiet week

January 14, 2008

Last week was a quiet week.

JORDAN--He's improving with his reading and writing each week. He's also (finally!) starting to read other books on his own. Yesterday during sacrament meeting, he read through the Book of Mormon Reader. Saturday we went to the library and he's already read one of his books. I'm excited to see that! He decided to enter the science fair at Westbrook. He wants to do something with rockets but I don't know if that is such a good idea--the rules state that the work has to be mostly the student's work so we need to come up with something that he can do on his own with minimal help from Mom and Dad.

CHRISTIE--She did her Indian project presentation on the 9th. She decided to do a Comanche teepee. I went to school for the presentation and she did very well. She's not afraid to speak in front of a crowd! Her teacher was very impressed and gave her full credit. Now we're on to the science fair project. I need to ask her again today if this what she wants to do but she mentioned wanting to study how the earth moves around the sun. The project has to have something to do with space.

MERILEE--I have a new calling in church. I'm the assistant music leader. Mostly this will be subbing for the music leader if she can't be at church and helping with ward choir, etc. Last week (Jan. 6) I led the music for sacrament meeting and yesterday (Jan. 13) was our ward conference and I did a solo of a song called "May I Serve Thee". It's in the March 2004 Ensign. I got a lot of compliments on it. I didn't do much with Deaf Mentor last week so really need to get going on the projects this week. I don't really have deadlines but do need to be working on them. I decided in December, when thinking about my 2008 goals, that I wanted some intellectual stimulation so I dug out my basic nutrition book from my first quarter of college and I am reading through it again. I remember a lot of it! I am also working on various projects with sewing, quilting and scrapbooking.

STEVEN--He had a quiet week at work--the major projects he's been working on are done and the new ones haven't started yet so he had a nice little break last week.

FAMILY--We decided this year we were going to read the scriptures DAILY. And I am proud to say that we have done it! There were two days when we weren't home in the evening so we missed those days but we did read two chapters the next day, so today, the 14th of January, we will read the 14th chapter of 1 Nephi. We haven't been doing this all that long but I have definitely noticed a change! I'm not sure who said it but someone (one of the prophets?) said that reading the Book of Mormon would change one's life and it is true!

We are also ready to start a kitchen remodel project. We're going to do it a little at a time. We're going to start with the kitchen floor. The linoleum in the kitchen is really worn looking and there are actually two spots where it looks like the linoleum got ripped off and the seams are starting to open so we're taking that out. We decided to rip out the carpet in the dining area and make the whole thing linoleum. Hopefully we'll have that done by the end of January. Other projects we have in mind are: paint the walls, replace the countertop, replace the sink, replace the garbage disposal (it's not working anymore) and replace the door pulls. I'm going to take off the doors of the cupboards and clean them really good and they should look good for a few years.

We look forward to reading your blog posts. It's fun to hear about what you do and what you're experiencing. The funeral you wrote about was quite fascinating!

When is your P-day? Can you check on here anytime or are you only supposed to read family letters/write on P-day?

Love,
Merilee

This was a really great post. I think that this is just what mom and dad were looking for!
